I believe I've said it before, and I'll say it again... One of the Best Helmets I've ever seen. I think I can pick up my jaw now...

And in case you didn't know, you've made the WIP Wednesday on the Source front page (so did I)!

Looks great Tom! Keep it up! :)

Dude, That is .......AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Did you use clay to get those details in? Or was it plaster?

no update yet. i am making molds of the stuff i have finished and working on the gaunlets and shins. i will post more pics weds.

I saw some of you sculpting and i think i am going to give it a try. i think i can work will clay a little better than bondo...

all and all GREAT WORK!! i am inspired. well... re-inspired i kinda took the summer off from armor building

i am glad i have inspired you to try sculpting. i use clay, bondo, foam and basicly anything i can get my hands on. i got into building props with my fett, then i could not buy a kashyyyk trooper costume so i sculpted one. it was my first complete build. not perfect by along shot but acceptable. i plan to redo parts of the kashyyyk trooper once i get the odst done.

the key thing is to take your time and not get fustrated. dali, michealagnlo and the like did not start out painting and sculpting masterpieces. they took a life time to master the skills they had. my stuff is getting better and i am trying to imporve my sculpting, molding and casting skills all the time. yes ,they are 3 different set of skills. as long as you are trying to improve with each piece you build. you will find sculpting very rewarding. i encourage you to look at other builders stuff to learn technique. i love the stuff nzjedi, evo, skygunbro, scifire guys and others have done and are doing. if you follow thier lead, you cannot go wrong.

remeber , if it is worth doing , it is worth doing right.

@mrbungle

yeah i cant wait to start! i got a question though. did you put bondo over the clay? i assume not but thought i'd ask. and the clay you used - was it oil based and sulfur free?

i don't put bondo over clay. if sculpt something out of clay, i then make a transition mold. then cast it , then start working on it with bondo. the clay i use is sulfur free plasti-clay.

or i use floral foam, resin , then bondo.

cool! i cant wait to start! hey got one more thing to ask. (i guess i am trying to pump info from you since it seems to look like you know what your doing. - take that as a compliment!) what is the transition mold made out of? same as the others? and would a gallon of smooth-on be enough for a helmet?

im no mold expert but either way if your talking about the mold or cast it depends on how many times you mess up, and how thick you wan't the mold/cast to be.

MB, Man it looks fantastic, 59 times on the dome? holy bajeepers, i guess if your gonna do something do it right aye?

Fantastic though, look forward to seeing the finished suit.

Cheers, Dave.

thanks.

rachet, if i were you i would put on of the HD odst helmet peps together. fiberglass the inside, then if you don't like bondo, use van aken modeling clay over that. it is pretty hard. you can take a heatgun to it to soften it up to spread it on but it does get pretty hard but not hard enough where you can't rework areas.

a gallon of mold max 20 will be plenty of rubber for a helmet. when making a transition mold. you don't have to worry about the mold not holding up after one casting. because it is a transition mold. but the final mold, you want to make sure it is right and can stand up to multiple castings. ie thicker rubber coat and thicker mother mold.

the reason i like bondo is i can make a finished master without haveing to waste rubber for a transition mold on large pieces. but if you get real good at the clay method. you will sculpt a finished piece and there is no need to trasfer the sculpt to resin for final sculpting.

perfect! so what i am hearing is that you cant make a master mold if you sclupt from clay!

Great work MB!!! The cast turned out great! The Fiberglass cast...did you use Smoothcast Roto and backed it with Fiberglass? That is what I'm guess you did. IF not yet us know. That technique isn't used around here much.

Keep on Truckin'!!!
