1) Do you have a specific process for creating your vacuum former? It looks rather simple yet I somehow cant grasp the idea (im VERY unfamiliar with this type of mold creation)

2) What method and materials did you use to create the rectangular vent-like structures on the side of the helmet and the round visor piece?

1) He did make a small tutorial on how to make his vacuum former, see page 1

2) He answers this on page 7

3) I would also like a more detailed explanation on how to use this most effectively.

1) I saw his explanation on the vacuum former, but I was asking for more of an in depth explanation of how he constructed the pieces. Its ok, I will probably just google it later or send him a PM.

2) For the vent structure and the buckle and round piece under the visor i was wondering if he hand constructed them of got some blueprints for the exact measurements. It would seem like that, but Im guessing he simply used a reference and created the himself (which would make him even more of a beast than he is already).

1 Do not try to copy my vacuum former, it sucks. There are much better on the net.
2 It's just eyeballed from photos.

Haha, fair enough. I found some excellent vids the other day on Youtube for how to make them, so I got alot of info from those.

Sorry, but two more questions that you can maybe answer:

1) For the vent ridges, how did you form the slots?

I tried reasoning it out with the method you used for making the vent recess, but it didn't seem to be quite the most efficient way to do it. Then I thought that maybe you had stuck an even piece of styrene there and filled the spaces one by one with bondo, am I correct?

2) This just baffles me in every way, which is good :)

Putting it bluntly, how? Thanks for the help Rube, I assure you Im taking notes :)

The vents are bondo cast into long rectangular styrene plastic forms. Each piece of the vent ridges was cut to size, sanded and then glued into place with a thin coating of bondo.

Ah that explains so much! Thanks, this is helping me plan a lot.

Mind shedding any light on the visor top piece? If you did the same stacking technique how did you get the details to be so rounded?

Ok, i may have been gone too long, but where did those shoulder peices come from? Ive been thinking about how the shoulder pad/straps would stay in place with the way the shoulder area of the torso is designed.

Also, when did you add those slots? I was looking through the thread, and it looks as if you suddenly added the slots in the helmet. o_O

Did you add that during the first bondo layer?

By the way, your armor inspired me to make ODST armor.

That's why you have to read the text as well as look at the pictures:)
Look a couple of posts up.

 How did I miss that? That's rube. And dude, your helmet is by far the best I've seen.

Carbon fiber/ Kevlar? Dude, I'm not planning to get shot wearing it. Smoothcast and fiberglass is working out OK. I don't yet have a suit to make molds from. Thanks though.

. Maybe I could get a copy of the suit to make some molds!
Maybe you could make your own ?? ;)

I love this thread Rube, everything looks great

But when you get the suit done and if you do copies Id love to get my hands on one (takes a lot less time out of making the carbon copies if i did). Id even cut you in if I did a production since my idea would be based off your suit.

The very last thing you want to do around here (or any prop community for that matter) is to say that you want to get your hands on someone's creation and make "copies" of it. Especially since you seem to be indicating a "production" mentality. This is referred to as "recasting" and is frowned upon in the strictest way possible. You may want to rethink how you approach this subject here - you have made 2 posts so far and both have indicated that you are interested in making copies of another members work...

If nothing else any "business propositions" that you may have for members should be handled via PM. Your ideas for using carbon fiber are sound (if not revolutionary) but your message could easily get lost. As NZ-TK suggested, this forum is really geared towards creating your own projects. I for one would love to see some CF armor in action...

Welcome to the 405th and good luck!

Ah, well that would make sense. I can understand how that could be frowned upon. Then I would like to retract those statements. lol As you can tell im pretty new so this whole world of armor creation seems to have gotten my butt hanging in the breeze.

Ill just have to head off and make my own stuff. I do have a CAD program I can use to create in 3D and then build it but that takes a lot of effort to get everything right. With my current job I dont have a whole lot of extra time on my hands so there I go. Sorry! lol
