Thoughts on a Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana Battalion?

I wanted to start this thread to get the thoughts down of Midwest members in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana forming a battalion. We have the deployed members and have done build days before at my house. I believe this would make us meet the requirements for a battalion. Getting staff's opinion and the input from all the deployed members here would be ideal for gauging the interest in forming this battalion.

Ohio has had an explosion of cons in the past few years. All of us know CGC and have gotten lost in the Columbus Convention Center. There are so many other cons between the 3 states that I can't begin to list them all. A battalion in this area with local booth assets on hand would do wonders for Midwest logistics. I'm sure people that have made the 6h drive from Chicago to Cleveland can agree.

I'm all for a battalion. I know we could make it work if everybody is interested. We have the vehicles, storage, and build areas for assets with enough brain cells to glue something together.

I hope to get deployment submitted soon, but I love the thought of a battalion in those areas and support the idea!

To LadyRed’s point, booth assets for awhile have been a game of who has what and where? Together we can get a spot for the booth assets to live and be prepped for the next con. Also having some craft days to make a booth up to snuff with C2E2’s booth last weekend would be amazing to have for our cons. But I’m getting in the weeds now.

I do not support this idea because I have not seen anyone answer the simple question of Why?
Can anyone offer an actual reason as to why we need a new 3 state Battalion and what, if anything, will change if we do?
I don't understand this idea that we need to have a Battalion to have booth assets? How would adding another layer of bureaucracy to the group, a new layer of elections, a new layer of Forum and Discord permissions, suddenly make it so we have booth assets?

What is stopping you from working together to build booths assets now? How will having a Battalion suddenly change who stores booth assets and where?

I think this is a really good set of questions folks should answer on as well. I love the idea of battalions but it does ADD a layer of complication as well for your RCO, and if things are in fact operating soundly I don't see why reinventing the wheel would be of interest. It worked well for MO/KS because member volume, and arguably similar for IL/WI/MN. Ohio DOES have our largest events of the regiment but also gets comparable support because of that from the regiment at large.

My impression was that this would help with organizing booth assets that are harder to get out to events in the proposed region. We have already had several miscommunications on the flags and backdrops I was told were staying with me permanently for events out here. They then have gone back to the battalions during TORG in a split second conversation in the chaos of packing. Having a battalion in this area with a manifest of its assets would have helped with all of this and keeping track of everything. The meetings battalions have are also a benefit to organizing what is going on with booth assets. These last few cons it has been all of us frantically messaging each other with who has what before a con in PMs.

My assumption was that the point of forming a battalion was to more effectively coordinate all of this. I believe it's asking a lot to have the RCO alone organize every detail of all the cons out here, especially since they usually are further away from the cons on the Western side of the Midwest. We have been lucky to have members of battalions drive to TORG and CGC last year to help organize assets but there is no guarantee they can make it to every con to help. With more and more cons being added that have a booth presence over here; it just is putting strain on organizing all the logistics. Heck more are being added with Origins and there is talk of more still.

Everybody around here could improve on some of the miscommunications and organizing with group chats, but if we did that then we would basically be a battalion in all but name wouldn’t we? I don't have the viewpoint of staff to comment on how much of a hassle it is with bureaucracy to add another battalion. I think it would help more then be an inconvenience but I only have the experience as an active member to comment on this.

No deployed suit yet, i hope to do so with my VIII, but id be down for this. not being in staff as well it seems like it would release some burden on crazy logistics and risking travel of large assets. but that's from my perspective. i don't have the time in the forums as other members but i feel like we already have a solid team of creators for these 3 states and the cons here to really make an impact. A note on more cons coming as well...the volunteers for Ohayocon split and created Sekaicon, a new fresh con for the 405th to show up and show out at. i will say that this year it took place at the same time as C2E2,, but there's no saying it couldn't be different dates next time. Ohio is bumping with opportunities and id love to hang with our other state members as well!

Ive been able to attend a few cons in this sort of area so I'd like to share my thoughts

Having a go-to person in charge for events I think will be the main benefit here. Last year at the Cleveland Gaming Classic, there were no staff members present (I was not staff at the time). Now, that group of people is quite competent to put on a booth themselves, so the booth was an overall success, but there were certainly times regular members were doing things that ideally would be done by an official staff member.

If I'm not mistaken, Wayward Flood was responsible for emailing the con and organizing/checking us into our provided hotel rooms, he coordinated our setup on the actual day, he was the one who brought my exhibitor badge to me when I arrived, he was the one to make sure there were people at the booth first thing in the morning for con open, he stayed at the booth after everyone had left to make sure everything was put away properly, and he coordinated making sure we had a dinner plan and designated people to hold our spot in line at the restaurant. Throughout the weekend he was essentially doing the job of a staff member without the official title.

There may have also been things we didn't get to do as a community that weekend because there was no staff member. One of our members is a talented photographer, but we didn't manage to coordinate a photoshoot. If there were staff members closer to the convention geographically and in terms of its organization, extra touches like a photoshoot can be made. Otherwise, that responsibility falls to no one. It would also be made clearer who to go to if any issues arise. Without a staff member, communication can sometimes be poor. If there's no go-to person, one member might have information others do not, but not share it because it's not their designated role.

And I don't think banking on out-of-town staff members is a sustainable solution. There were a few members and even staff members who were planning on coming from a distance to CGC, but ultimately couldn't make it. What might have happened if "acting-staff" members like Flood were depending on those people for our appearance at CGC instead of assuming the responsibility? Having a staff member local to these events would certainly be a more sustainable way to put on many events. It would also be helpful for organizing meet-ups, not just booth appearances. I enjoyed visiting Cleveland last year for a crafting day organized by a non-staff member, for example.

Keeping track of assets would be a nice additional effect of a battalion. Just recently I was looking to borrow a backdrop for an event up here in Canada, and the very first person I asked was Flood, because I knew he played such a big role in CGC. He had returned some things to other staff members, but had no idea who actually had them at that moment as he isn't a staff member and doesn't have that information. I later learned that those resources had been moved around a bit since then, but it just goes to show that Flood was essentially acting as a staff member.

I know that this would add another layer of "paperwork" to the community. I'm also not sure how effective a 3-state battalion may be. I know that for at least Ohio, the more localized oversight of staff would be a welcome addition. Ultimately I suppose the question is; is the increased paperwork justified by the improved quality of booths, meet ups, and other organized events? It's hard to be certain.

There may be other ways to improve coordination and communication at events. If we take CGC as an example, perhaps the areas of improvement I talked about could all have been solved with a simple "WaywardFlood is in charge this weekend" in the primary event posting. That would make it clear to everyone who to report to, without the need for an additional election.

Really, I don't have a say in this discussion. But I thought it might be helpful to hear my perspective as a member who regularly attends events in this area.

The reason for a 3 state battalion is that a few members in the states outside of Ohio are interested in being part of a battalion. They have been at build days at my house too and want to share in that culture a battalion brings. You could call it that drive to achieve a planned goal as a group. All of the Midwest is very tight knit. We can't always be together as a whole all the time as we would like to, so forming a small group like a battalion helps reinforce our bond while we wait for the next gigantic con to come around.

As far as organization goes, the Midwest has too many states to realistically give each a battalion if it ever could grow to that. We would be up to our eyeballs in staff at that level. Having battalions formed from a handful of states would allow battalions to delegate to where the con activity is highest at through out the year. This would keep the bureaucracy of having elections for multiple battalions/individual states down.

Ohio is in the weird position of having a lot of cons but being the furthest east in the Midwest. We then have Michigan and Indiana that aren't part of a battalion but don't currently have as many cons as Ohio is getting. It would be simpler to organize and delegate if we all formed a battalion in my opinion with the way the cons are spread out. That way we can easily figure out how to bring the full might of our props to bear at conventions in the less con heavy areas.

Nothing is inherently stopping us from building booth assets on our own. While yes the proposed 3 state battalion would add extra level of staff that may not be needed but it would give use staff on this side of the Midwest to help with the organization cons/outting and give a POC if official staff can't make it out to an event. Wayward did a fantastic job with CGC last year in making things happen and getting things organized.

At the barest minimum, official or not, a discord to keep things organized would be helpful.

And no, it would not or should not be a place to mess around. I'd really like a place to keep information readily available and not get buried under a mountain of other messages and memes.

I originally will say I also liked the idea of a battalion for these three states for a lot of what has been echoed here. Being so far out east it makes it much more reliable for the larger events we have there now having a guaranteed staff authority to handle and govern themselves. I won't mince it, it is HARD to get out to that area for a lot of us whether by flight or car, so seeing the presence grow there as it has, has been astounding. I think it would help too in a sense of giving an identity to the growth there and pulling more people into the community.

Regarding booth assets, I agree there has been a LOT of frustration regarding where assets go, end up, stored etc. I myself have been upset by those communication and also equal part am the reason they have happened. I can only assume those frustrations are amplified with having no staff at a lot of events out there or SO many moving parts at the larger activations that tracking goes to the wayside. We saw a big improvement at C2E2 but I think we can do more.

My two cents, and I'll both tread lightly, and for personal reasons not get into too much detail.

I was critical of the size of the Midwest Reg from the beginning, it's too large. A Battalion for MI, IN and OH is reasonable. I think for organization, Midwest Regiment should've been North/South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska, and a Great Lakes Regiment for Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. A 3 state battalion for the reasons stated by others in favor is a reasonable compromise. It seems that the three states have capable people that can be trusted to make good decisions for the region, making any additional work for Regimental leadership minimal at best. It's a tall ask for someone in the Dakotas to try and participate with events in OH.

TL : DR I support the idea of the Battalion for OH, MI and IN.
