Baby's first ODST build

First, I LOVE your armour !

Second, How did you get the helmet picture on your Elegoo Neptune 3?

Mine doesn't show anything X)
I don't know how the picture showed up on the preview, I do have a Neptune 3 plus so maybe it's something to do with that, the preview picture has always been there since I opened it and I don't know if there's a setting to get the preview.

i got the vacuum form buck (hehe) printed, new filament broke my printer for a few days so there's a few problem areas. Not worried about that, I made the buck just a bit too small and I don't want to reprint it, so I hope that once I get a few visors formed that I can just kind of mold it, but if not I can just cut my losses and reprint one that is bigger.

Disaster has struck. My first 3d print failure did not result in an ugly pile of spaghetti, but an entire glob of doom that completely blocked the extruder and melted several key wires and fan blades. I had issues with it just 1 day ago and it finally worked, only for the 3d printer gods to smite me with this, I am now out 36 dollars and valuable time.

NOOOO THE HORROR! I hope you financially recover from this I truly do. However atleast in the meantime you have props to sand!

I get paid in a few days so it'll be a minor expense, I'm glad that only the nozzle broke and a fire didn't start from the wiring having 250°(C)+ PLA on them (the fan was melted so there was no cooling).

I have a bunch of spot putty, 140 and 320 grit sandpaper because that's all ACE had in stock at the time, they'll work though. I'm worried about the PLA melting when sanding because apparently that's a problem, so I'm gonna do a smaller prop first before jumping to my helmet and risking it melting if that does come to fruition.

Depends on how hard and fast you sand, you really gotta push some serious friction to get it to start melting. If you're using a tool then use a low setting and just eat at the print.
I recommend going to pla+ if you're wanting to stay with pla.

ULTRA HUGE MEGA UPDATE TIME. WHOOOOWHEEEEE it's been a hot minute since I've posted. WELL, FIRST THINGS FIRST, been busy as all hell with school lately, so I decided to switch to mainly 3D printing as my go to method. I just don't have the time to be dealing with massive foam projects right now. I have to work full time and attend school, and with homework and all that fun stuff I just don't have the time to do foam.

ANYWAY. I'm kinda doing whatever the hell I want now. I'm mainly doing a Reach ODST, as noted by the thigh pads. I decided to ditch the Hull visor, because I just didn't really like the look of it, but I am keeping the uplink module.

I printed out the commando shoulder piece, as used by Carter my beloved . There's some pretty serious staircasing on the bottom part though, so I'm gonna use my wood burner to smooth that out in the coming days.

With Christmas break coming up I'm gonna remake the main staple ODST chest plate with higher quality foam. Then I'm gonna make the forearms and shins with foam so I can have some flexibility. And the shoulder straps too, but everything else is gonna be 3D printed.

I also tried using a Dremel to sand down hard to reach areas, and it just completely gnawed through my prints without doing much actual sanding, so definitely not doing that again. SPEAKING OF WHICH, I put a bit of spot putty on the helmet, didn't go too smooth. I definitely need to sand a lot more.

BUT, I won't be able to do that until I have a proper 80 grit orbital sander. And some actual sandpaper. the "sandpaper" I have now isn't even paper. It's this weird foamy crap that can't sand worth a damn.

As you can see below the back of the helmet is now white. It's white because I reprinted it to get rid of this weird artifact on the print and the white color was cheaper when ordering filament. Still PLA pro, just white instead of black.

Anyway that about wraps this all up. Toodles y'all.

P.S. any tips for sanding and smoothing hard to reach areas will be greatly appreciated. Also if I'm making big time rookie mistakes please point them out so I don't destroy this :p

Helmet part 2: Electric boogaloo

SO, I reprinted the helmet because it fell apart on me, very sad. Then when I reprinted the second version I found out I scaled it wrong, so another helmet was sacrificed to the cosplay gods for forgiveness. Finally, my third attempt, I got it properly scaled and glued together so it won't fall apart and it is ready for painting!

I haven't painted it yet though because it's 1 am and my mom will break my spine if she hears me spray painting on a school night so that'll probably come in another few days.

Me in my bed showing off the helmet attachment I just finished printing :DDD

Yet another attachment that I printed today, gonna sand both attachments tomorrow then paint them before gluing them on to the helmet.
And ignore that big seam I can't cover up because I ran out of bondo :(
I really hope the dark grey spray paint can mask it up well enough lol

Finally my exhausted skinny white kid frame inside the ODST and debating on sleeping in the helmet.

I definitely need to kick this into gear because I started this in August and have been kinda procrastinating because of school n stuff. I need to have it done before June so I can go to my local cosplay convention.

Anyway, that's all folks, have a great night!
