Your Recon helmet is really amazing. Good work.

Thanks, the Recon is my first ever helmet build so they can only get better from here :D

Awesome! Thanks, Belakor.

No worries :)

A few pics of the weathered right shin:

The flash washes out a lot of the more subtle weathering.
... and some experimental paintwork on the boot... cleaning Elite blood off your boots is so hard :p

Just need to pick up another can of black paint, some more glue to add the rest of the padding and some PVA to mix with the purple paint to make the 'blood' look more liquidy. Then I'm done and ready to pack for the flight on Fri :)

Elite blood... now theres a nice touch...

Now you need some Elite ears to hang around your neck and it'd be complete... wait, do Elites have ears?

You should do some blood splatter for the elite blood. Maybe drill out a decent portion of a cantalope and fill with your paint. Then smash it. We did some blood splatter in college, bt we had actual mannequin heads that were filled with bloody gue. Just remember it gets MESSY

@ SKG: The really annoying thing about that shin is that it's the best matte paint-job I've ever done (particularly the right side, it looks like it's been parkerized) but I don't know how I did it so I can't replicate it :rolleyes :p

For a pretty basic thing the blood really helps spice things up a bit :), breaks up the somewhat uninteresting black and silver on the boots and it also proves that, just because I'm a Recon Spartan doesn't mean I don't get my hands (or feet in this case) dirty :D

@ Spase: I was originally going to go with Hunter blood/goo but I didn't have any orange. Not sure about Elites having ears but I like the idea :D I'm working on some other 'trophies', though they might take a while to finish... anyone know the color of Prophet blood? ;)

@ LukeTrocity: That sounds fun :D I'll have to give the cantaloupe thing a go, I wouldn't dare do it now because I'd probably screw it up and look weird while trooping this weekend:lol: .

For anyone curious about the blood, what I did was:
Mix blue and red acrylic paint (I didn't have purple so I used Enchanted blue Citadel paint and some basic non-GW red) until I got a purple that I was happy with and thickened that mix with some PVA glue. The PVA dries with a glossy liquid looking finish which makes the blood look better than paint alone, once that's all mixed up I just painted it on in globs with an old detailing brush used for GW minis.
To make things a little more interesting I also mixed in ripped up bits of a cotton ball to the paint/glue and added the stringy bits of cotton by hand (a very messy job ;)) to simulate gore of some kind.

I'll try and get some pics of the improved blood on the boot tonight...
... back to paint I go :)

Update: Here are the pics of the finished left boot:

The lighting seems to be washing the color out a bit, it's not that blue color in person, more a dark purple. I'll probably throw some gloss on the blood to finish it off but if I don't have the time I'll still be happy with it.

Like Skullcandy said, nice legs :p lol

The detailing on the boots is pretty damn good. Oh, and the Covenant blood spatter on the legs is a nice touch, heh. You planning on adding any details to the leg armour?

Also, what's this "HALO 2 Spotting Scope" you speak of? I'm afraid I am not familiar with that piece... :cautious:

Remember the beginning of the second level right before you go down in the Pelican? There's a sniper on the rooftop.

Cortana: He's on that carrier, and he's calling for help.

Spotter: Immediate, Grid Kilo-23 is hot. Recommend mission abort.

Pilot: Roger, Recon. It's your call, sarge.

Johnson: We're going in. Get tactical, marines!

@ Link: Thanks Link. I'm always keen to see other people's helmets :D

@ SKG: Thanks Skullcandy :) I was actually thinking the same thing, I've got some UV LED's here somewhere... :D

@ S II: Thanks:lol:
Now you can see my "nice legs" all together :D

I was going to hold off on posting this but I'm not sure what the internet will be like at the Con so I'll post it now :) Just a quick shot I took last night.

The detailing on the legs is pretty minimal right now, just the basic weathering and I've added a small amount of gore to the right shin. I was planning on doing a bit more but I've run out of time :(

You can also see the spotting scope on the same level that Friendly is taking about (Outskirts I think), when you jump up on top of the building at the very start to get the blind skull... I really need to boot up Halo 2 and get some good shots of it.

@ Air_Force_Spartans: Thanks, I'm going to try and get some more photos of the blood on the other parts in a few days :)

This'll probably be the last update from me until next week sometime, the armor is all done now and packed in a couple of suitcases ready for the flight south in a few hours :)... just hope it survives the baggage handlers
If I can get on the net while I'm away I'll be uploading whatever photos I get to either my Photobucket account or my Flickr account (probably both)

I love it when you show stuff like this...I actually don't think that I will make it for my CON since my Father in law passed away on Sunday but at leasts I got that push from you about this buddy!!

Trust me I plan on finishing it and it looks like I can just take my time and add the details. I actually gots to show you pics as well...I actually got to adding some detail on my shins so I will show that in my thread but thanks again for the small motivation buddy!!

Your work is looking awesome as usual, can't wait to see some full size pics of the suit!! Top notch!!

@ Friendly: Thanks :D

@ WetOkole: Sorry to hear about your father in-law :( also sorry to hear you couldn't get the armor done in time but real world stuff is top priority and it'll be much better now that you don't have to rush :)

@ Keegan : Plaid huh? okay, now where did I put that can of plaid spraypaint :p you know, I'd kind of like someone to do some plaid armor, just to be different.
Glad people are finding all the photos useful, I'm fortunate enough to have pretty decent photography equipment at my disposal and I like photography so I try to get good photos of the parts whenever possible :) It's also handy to have all these pics to put in my portfolio.

So, I finished the armor up and it survived the flight to Wellington (the trigger guard on the pistol broke but I managed to hold it in place so no one noticed). The armor seemed to be well liked by the public and quite a few of the exhibitors, including the Weta crew and Richard Taylor, who made an appearance on the Sunday :)
Got some interesting comments, I believe someone thought I looked like a Power Ranger o_O and the usual Star Wars comments :rolleyes I also heard a few "He can has Recon"s as I walked around.

The armor was fairly comfortable to wear, I didn't have enough padding in the chest area (shoulders specifically) and after the 10 hour troop I did on day two I was really starting to feel it

I didn't get many pics of the finished armor on my camera (maybe 10 at the most) and quite a few are too dark, I've picked a couple that weren't dark or out of focus and I've also got a couple from another camera that was being used by a friend:
th_P4200042.jpg th_SpartanWarthog.jpg
th_DSC05920-1.jpg th_DSC059191.jpg
(the first two are from my camera)

There should be more pics showing up over the next week or two, I must have had at least 150 photos taken (and that's probably a low estimate) so some are bound to turn up on Flickr or Photobucket, plus Weta got some so they'll have them up on their site sometime. There'll be a video or two up on youtube sometime too :)
When I find any photos/videos I'll post them here.

now Belakor you and i both know that if some one had plaid armor the first thing that would pop in to your mind would be WTF. but yeah i think it would be cool if some one did Plaid armor it would defenitly be a conversation peice
