:eek so your saying its a surprise to be discovered? Thats cool, as long as you guys have fun doing the behind the scenes, hoping for the Fan Film !! :p

I hope you guys aren't spending all your money on props! It would be a humongous shame to invest in all this great stuff and then have sub standard production values.

Are you looking to hire a proper camera crew and package? I don't know anyone in the UK so I can't recommend who but at the very least try and shoot in Red or S16mm and have a proper crew. I would help you if I was on the other side of the pond but even with volunteer professional film people the equip doesn't come for free. I don't know the scope of your film but with all this great production design you should heavily invest in a solid crew and post.

I've been kicking around a short film myself with some colleagues but we've hit the stumbling block of funding everything + the props/equipment, plus we are busy as hell.

Goodluck!

Film is not a possibility. RED is currently a serious consideration, otherwise we may have to settle for HD prosumer cameras such as the HVX200 (one of which we already own) or EX1. The RED Scarlet is also a serious consideration - the cost of buying one will likely be the same as the cost of hiring the full RED, so it's something to think about. We also have steadicam ops, camera ops, sound engineers and so on all of whom already have their own equipment, and are willing to allow their use for Operation Chastity. I foresee the big spends for the main shoot being lighting, locations and crew expenses.

The hope remains we will be able to recoup some of the money spent on props to reinvest in the main shoot. If we can manage that, the show will go just fine.

Wow... I have just spent the last three hours or so (with many breaks lol) reading the most AMAZING (I CANT EVEN THINK OF THE WORD I'M LOOKING FOR IT'S SO AWESOME!!!!!!) lol... I Worship you! Lol this is the highlight of my week... Although, my life is boring >.> <.< Lol Gl and I would love to donate, to bad I'm a fourteen year old noob with no life or money >.<) lol :) and btw. when I saw this thread and read the first post my jaw hit the floor. Admitting you're a n00b makes you less of one :D some people I know (not on the 405th) won't admit they're n00bs (at halo), but I embrace my n00bness, I reach out and hug it. :eek

Anyway...

Make sure any cg effects (I'm assuming you'll be using them, how can you otherwise) are as best as they can be. Would be a shame to have a halo movie have the effects of a 1950s corny sci-fi.

GOOD LUCK!

For web out I guess the HVX200 or EX1 would be okay but I would seriously not recommend it if you plan on watching it in 1080 HD or project it in 2k. Both those cameras are pretty $#!Tty on their high ends. If you want to stay that route at the very least get a Varicam of F900 as they'll be able to stand up to proper HD and 2k projection.

S16mm might seem like a big expense but many rental houses may be willing to give you a good deal on an Arri SR2 or some other medium weight PL mounted camera. If you really want to jump into film I would recommend getting a 2 perf 35mm konvas which would cost the same as S16mm in in stock but have the 35mm format size. Of course you can't strike projectable film from the negatives because of the 2 perf to 4 perf conversion, but it's great for digital intermediate. Talk to your DP about trying to get your hands on shortends.

The decision to strike out film was not simply due to the expense - we were also considering turnaround time, ease of editing, use in conjunction with VFX and also the eventual grading. Digital, by all accounts for the scale of production and what we're trying to do, is far better for purpose than film. From a more personal perspective, I'd much rather save film for another project after this one.

I had a very constructive day's meeting with my 1st and 2nd ADs yesterday, and they were both in support of acquiring a RED Scarlet once they come out. That is currently at the forefront of our consideration - an EX1, or an HVX, would be our fallback position.

So, finally I have some actual news! Yay! Only took a month.

First of all, Operation Chastity can now be found on Twitter, where you'll find me complaining about the difficulties of low budget independant film making and the summer heat. You can find it at http://twitter.com/opchastity

Secondly, some music news! We mentioned a while back that we were in talks with Swedish power metal band Sabaton about using a couple of their songs in the film, and I'm happy to say they are going well! There is a character in the film, a Recon Marine private, who spends a lot of their time out of the field listening to flip music - and if things continue to go well, then perhaps Sabaton will be their band of choice. Their combat-themed music blends nicely with the profile of the Marines nature, so fingers crossed.

Thirdly, the Marine body armour prototype has been completed! We're sending it back to China so we can get a second vest prototype for approval and then we'll see about showing off how we're designing out Marine armour in general. :)

Swweeeet!

Sabaton is awesome, can't believe you are working with them, Primo Victoria is one of my favorites.

Thanks for answering that for me HaloFreakX :D

The tracks we're currently looking into using are Panzer Battalion and Light In The Black, both of which are great tracks.

Peter,

I wondering how much in the way of 3D animation you will be using in the movie. I am supposing that things such as pelicans, and covenant vehicles will be animated.

Do you already have an animator in mind, or are you looking for somebody? I have experience modeling and animating in blender, if you need an animator I can provide my services.

The only obstacle I have is that I have mediocre rendering capability.

Anyways, keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing the finished product.
