First Build: Mark VI

Hi guys Lurx from sweden here, Im kinda new to all this armorbuilding and to the site so please be jentle
I started out the other day building my helmet out of cardstock and now its finished

what do you think? does it look ok ?

have some questions about the resin and stuff you are using over there in the states
the resin is it polyester resin or epoxy resin?
bondo bodyfiller is it a fiberglass spackle?

we dont have the brands you are using and It's kinda pointless to import when we have it here under another brand

I think it looks amazing. I've done 4 helmets, finished 2, and none of them had this great a pep work. As for the other questions, I suggest you Google those things. Look at it this way, this isn't common knowledge people care to remember, so the person answering your questions would be using Google to find these things out. It's better to cut out the middle man and do some investigative work yourself.

With that being said. Welcome to the 405th!

Oh and one more thing. Be prepared for some structural issues. The visor should be one of the last things you do/remove. Although, I still see the tabs in this picture. Maybe, you added them after taking these pictures?

The reason being is that the visor will help the helmet keep its shape during resining and hardening. I'm not saying it's shot, you're just gonna have to be very careful so it doesn't warp.

hehe sweet ty man ^^ well I have googled it and what I can see with the hardener and things you are using its polyester resin but I aint sure same with the fiberglassspackle
I think I have the right materials think I just need to try and fail until I get i right xD thought just someone knew what the resin you guys are using was made of if it stod on the package and stuff like that

In my own opinion it appears that you are a relatively small person like me (I'm 5'11 but 130lbs i.e. skinny as hell) and your helmet looks like it will be a bit bigger in proportion to the rest of the armor. I could be wrong and the angle may have thrown me off or you might be big as ****! Haha either way that's my opinion. If you look around for the Italian reach guys, their post should been relatively recent, their helmets look too big. Excellent work but too big. Hope it all works well for you buddy!!

haha nope not small at all xD 191 cm and 95kg kinda not skinny at all xD its like 6,2 and 209 Ibs

the helmet may be a little big I made it 30cm in height so think the scale is a little to big for me but I will build the rest of the armor and then return to the helmet at last or so, I dont wanna get bored building 2 hemlets right after eachother

The pep looks great, but I have one bit of advice. I would highly recommend putting in the support pieces. I've built three of these helmets, the first was too small, the second, I left the supports out and when I attempted to resin it, it collapsed in on itself. The third, I put the supports in and had no problems. In my opinion, any helmet with no built in visor needs some sort of support in the visor area to prevent any sagging/collapsing.

Anyway, keep building, keep posting and let us all see your progress!

Edit: BTW, the sizing of your helmet looks fine to me. You have to take into account any padding that will go into the helmet and it looks like you've thought of that.

I will put in the visor so dont worry m8 do I still need supportpieces if I have the visor?

will post as much as I can but I will have to take a brake now sadly enough. Im going to work for 2 weeks straight now, Im a sailor so will be out on the sea all the time cant pep there :/

allright will try to use this helmet then and see what it delivers if Im not happy I'll make another one not to hard

ok Im back from ze boat now and I have peped some pieces on the sea pictures will come later on Im at my mom and dads place atm so cant take any pictures on them

have build an "oven" now for the resin stage its to cold in the shed that Im working in

some update:

made the left forearm and then I went to mom and dad to resin both forearms and handplates here are a few pictures

everything resined and ready for the oven (A) haha:



and well I just had to...



really happy with the scaling but I have some problems getting my hands trough the forearms lower parts are those needed to be "cuted"? so my hand slip out easy?

Yeah they can be a bit of a squeeze at the end. I'd wait until you have resined the outside and fibreglassed the inside before sanding to fit... It may be too brittle to sand or burr the paper if you try to trim now.

And yeah, it sucks not being able to wear them between steps .

I have resined the outside on these parts just so they arnt to "squishy", I will also resin the inside b4 I fiberglass it

I had to sand off all the 'lip' on the cuff ends of mine as I have very wide/big hands. Best done at the end of glassing and bondo. Mr dremel and a sanding drum make very quick work of it but keep trying for fit, dont take it all off in one go.
