Nice bondo work! I love the foam barrier trick for clean raised sections, I hope you don't mind but I'll be stealing that trick lol

JK, but excellent tip though! Definitely makes bondo work a little less scary! lol

Drew

Awesome build
thanks buddy!

Wow, I really like all the detail work.....keep it up!
corweena thanks for the kind words, i will finish this one hopefully soon. the detail work in the face area might prove to be a bit of a pain but i will get what i want out of it!

Thanks Drewhinkle, i learned this from cereals methods and it works fantastic. And if I minded I wouldn't be sharing it ;) put it to great use buddy!

Now for the last update of the day!

first pictures are the building of the "fins" is what I am gonna call it, i built a square box the size of the middle section and marked on the helmet where I wanted them to be put. i than masked off the helmet to keep the bondo mess to a minimum and off the helmet. easier mess to clean if you over do it, just pull the tape and go.

When that was done I cut away the excess trash I didn't need and got a general shape a bit larger than what I was going for than proceeded to sand them into the desired shape. for the underside of the fin i used a triangle needle file to gain an overhang and give it a bit of a meaner/better look. So this the final product on this part of my build in progress

Damm sonny i hope my fins come out as nice as yours...starting to reconisder my approach towards them.

the neck detail really insipres me to give it a try but idk :/

love the progess keep it up bro

I like the playing card technique, creative way to get that feature, looks great
Spencers this is the way to go. I learned this from cerealkillers thread on his master chief mkvi build. he has lots of great informative you tube vidoes on his build look up dghezzo on youtube or go to his thread in the elite forum. you will learn alot there.

Slammers go for it if you feel good with it. it is very time consuming, i look at the helmet and think i worked from noon to nine on it drawing all over it and sticking it with foreign objects and measuring over and over. it doesn't seem like alot was done (in all actuality it is a ton of work to get it right and symmetrical) but the outcome is well worth the trouble after a helmet or two.

its all in the planning and the patience my friend.

I got a bit giddy with excitement when I saw that this thread had an update, then I find multiple updates! you spoil us :)
This helmet is going to be brilliant, just brilliant. Loving the work so far, keep it up!

that'll happen if i have a day to work on my projects on don't run into problems lol. just happen to have a last minute day off due to my carpool getting screwed up so i took advantage of it! Thanks sara, how is your project coming along? the newest update looks awesome from yours!

so not much of an update today, its starting to get cold here in my town and being at work all day when its decent gives me a small window to work with before I freeze lol. i started the side part of the "fins" and just finished the back on to see how it would come out and if I had tackled it right.
i started by using my laser last night and drawing the straight lines through the side of the helmet with a pencil than i used tape on the pencil line to make an actual straight line instead of squiggle lines, than i measured up where i wanted the fin to angle out and blend into the helmet and marked with tape how long they would go back. After all that was done I used the foam strips to make my "walls" to keep the bondo lines crisp

LASER!!!

after sanding and final shape of the back "fin"

came out pretty even and straight. after i signed out last night i couldn't sleep so I put on a movie and started away with the measuring and drawing and sticky foam forms.
So thats it for the night, time to warm up and clean. laters!

got the "fins" done tonight completely and started bring the face forward and drawing on it to figure out the game plan for the front half of the detail

sorry for the bad pictures, all i have is my phone for them. Hope you guys like it!

Jeez, so much progress so fast! Lol, the ridges along the top are amazing! I love the laser trick too! Can't wait to get to the shaping process of my helmets so I can try it out lol

Thanks Drew! I am pretty excited about this build being done so I have the motivation to keep going, the only problem is that its so cold and my heater doesn't work to well in the non insulated workspace of mine lol, darn winter season. if you would like to know how I did the ridges all i used was tape during the sanding to give myself something to sand to, when i barely hit the tape (you will hear the sandpaper touch it) thats when you know you got to the line you want. if you have to sand the opposite side just lay a mask of the tape on the opposing side and touch it up. works well, its easier to see than just a drawn line by pencil or pen and removes easily.
On a good note I have the next week off, no work until the second for me, which means lots of time for my projects :)

Holy blarg sonny that looks amazing ! I wish I was better at bonding like u cant wait to see more!
thanks ts. it takes time for sure to learn. if you look at the mark vi i did as my first full complete it was not nearly as good as these last couple. i figure for me it's all about your plan of attack, and your tools. the tools are only as good as the person using them. didn't matter how cheap or cheesy the tool is that i made. those are two of my important things. hopefully i have a decent update tonight for evryone watching

why must i always double post. Seems like not too many are responding, whichever way i did a little bit of work today, not much at all.
i did a little bit of face detail in front of the cheeks and sanded that down to bring the lkines to there final point, i sanded the top front of the helmet where everyone normally throws a light there to its proper angle that I liked, i need to build up and finish the sides of it now than fair everything into place. here it is with primer so i can see the highs and lows to smooth the back half of the helmet out. i have a week off so i am hoping to have this done this week

Jeez Sonny, you are an animal. Crazy progress, and looks awesome cant wait to see this done...At this rate you'll be done before the turkey is all gone:D. May have to fly you down my way and work on mine;)

Got a link for the plastic method...like to read more about it.

Socom my friend, I don't have any links for the plastic slush. I can tell you it doesn't require fiberglass inside unless you want to. it is stiff enough without glass. All i do is mix smooth cast 320 polyurethane liquid plastic 1:1 and poor it inside the helmet and move it around to coat the inside evenly until it sets. i did two coats inside and its hard as a rock now. And I am hoping to have tghis done by tghe end of the week. If anyone has any good paint ideas let me know, I can't seem to make up my mind. All suggestions are welcome!

Nice job on the helmet your doing a great job I love how the details are coming out, can't wait to see more

I am thinking i could use a vacation :)

Hyper, thank you. It means alot coming from a professional of your stature here. Its work like yours that have got me pushing to finish these

That five card TS helps to build the back of the "dam" than i glued the side walls to the little sides with a drop of superglue
29587_547178171976700_157907498_n.jpg

tHis is what the card looked like before i got to the sides, i scored the card with an exacto twice, folded it back and glued the now triangle piece down. than i taped it onto the helmet where i wanted it.

small progress update for the day

All i did today was the front top part of the detail, seemed like it took forever to get that done, i had to get my shape than add more bondo to fair it in than i had to get the very front of it angled right on the sides and smooth that in. It was just alot of back and forth work on it.

Until next time 405th (probably in a few hours lol) keep up your good work :)
