I must admit I get a little jealous when looking at work like this. It's just so awesome! My own skill level is just not as good. LOL! But I have not found a reason to give up yet! So ill be around for a while..... Lurking.....
i started the pep today and resined, slushed, and started the bondo work on the H3 Recon helmet today. thinking i will start with the basic shape and do something special with it to make it unique so this build might take a while (like the warrior helmet did lol) i have a workshop built now so it should be easier to work on my pepakura projects from now on.
so this is what i am gonna try and go for, something along the lines there of
i saw this on another thread and thought that it is just awesome looking and i want it, and if i want it i have to build it. also working on gaining infantry status on here too
i took sir tsabocs suggestion and method for the inside of the helmet, instead of rondo i used smooth on liquid plastic, no fiberglass at all. Firm and strong, light weight. Really nice method to use if you have the option to. i did three layers of resin on the outside and did it in sections to prevent warpage (top, middle, bottom.... repeat) I did start the first layer of bondo and sanded it down to try and define some shape but than i stopped do to being tired and taking care of the kiddos. let me know what you all think. I am hoping this one will come out well. Any comments/suggestions/ constructive criticism is always welcome.

boo double post, yay update!
So i had an unexpected day off from work due to my car pool forgetting about me (new guy mistake) and went to town on the back detail but first thing is first, my kid wanted me to post the picture of him sporting the helmet in progress
next is the first patch of detail
next level of detail
to make the detail i am using stickied back foam cut into 1/8 inch strips and making a wall/form than filling that area with bondo and when it gets to that next stage where it is tacky but not set i pull the foam form and than clean it up (sand, fill, fine work it) it is taking forever to pull the detail due to having to make the first step than moving onto the next and having to measure, draw, erase, measure, draw, stick foam. and yes thats pretty much the process lol. trying to make this as syymetrical as possible because if its not than i won't like it.
So now its time to do a little sanding and add more detail
first thing first: don't be sorry to ask a question! i have no issues helping out at all on that note Surename i build a small wall/barricade with sticky back foam. FIrst step is to layout your design that you want (i use a pencil to draw on the bondo) and than line it with tape. After the tape i put the sticky foam on in strips that make my "wall" at whatever height i want the detail to be. fill in this wall/barricade with bondo than when it dries i pull the wall/barricade off and i have my dirty basic shape i want. I than smooth it out and start with the next layer. I hope it helps. a great youtube channel is HERE It is a current members page, C3R3ALKILL3RS. has great highly informative videos and tuts on everything to do with bondo. he has a thread in the elite section too. good luck buddy! How do you go about getting the details to look like that? Do you just lay down your bondo really thick? Sorry, I'm a bondo noob here
Looking grreat so far, keep it up!
Thanks TS. it's coming along, slower than i like it to be but hey, it is what it is gotta take it slow to get the results we want. PM me with whatever questions you have, i am guaranteed to see it that way, I don't always see the posts that come up when they are updated. everyone uses photobucket to share there images, i just use my facebook lol. i have a private photo folder that i use to store all my pics in and just use there image location url lol. seems to work better for me to tell you the truth.Lookin great sonny cant wait to see more u took the render and ran with it. I'm glad u came along and built this same helm also. Ps ill have some questions ill pm u about or post them on my thread when photobucket starts to work again lol again looks beautiful
Hey surename, one way to do it is to put your bondo on let it firm up and then cut it to shape with a knife/scalpal or blade. When it finishes hardening and cures properly there is little sanding to be done. Thats how i did some parts of my fallout 3 helmet. You can cut the bondo quite easily while its still in its rubbery phase before it cures. Makes it a lot easier. His work is very awesome though.
And surename, the liquid plastic is great. It's super strong and less harmful to your body, only downside is the cost of the material but it doesn't take alot at all. it also weighs less than rondo and glass.
All you do is mix it 1:1 ratio than poor it in and coat the inside of your piece with it, carefully to prevent crushing or warping.
it is a product from a company, smooth on... product is called smoothcast 310
there is a smooth on distributor in richmond south australia.I'll have to see if I can find some of that. It sounds handy!
surename, it would have to be built up a bit. You can use pieces of card to get the general shape.
Currently i am trying to match the oppsite chin to the currently finsihed one, i get all the detail masking done and look at it from all angles and it all just looks wrong. i have done it three times already lol, i won't stop until i get it right lol.
SARA! its so aggravating to try and make it symmetrical, i think my eyes just keep playing games with me though lol. Thanks sara!I know COMPLETELY how you feel! I'm going through the same thing with my EVA Helmet, oh well, keep at it it's looking great!
