This is precisely why I started using poly fiber 2 filler it sands like butter. Also I only use bondo for stuff I break. Primer with filler is a great cheater as well.

This is looking great!

Sent from my 831C using Tapatalk

Thanks for the compliment, i sometimes use primer instead of 320 grit;)

Even though it looks rough, that will sand and/or file down incredibly easy. It is nice that it is one solid piece now, as you can make those ridges even more defined if you want without worrying about going through and hitting cardstock :) Another reason why I love using Rondo for casting is because it is incredibly strong yet has just enough give to not be brittle.

This is looking great and I can't wait to see what the end product looks like!

Thanks EVAkura, this is my first time trying to do any sort of casting, and it turned out well. i have sanded, glazed, and primed my first handplate. My second one just came out of the mold and im starting to clean it up. The method is so useful, silicone is expensive:confused Pics up soon of 1st handplate done. I have also just done my 1st layer of a mold for the side of the bicep pieces, molding is going to save sooo much peping(total of 4 of the side pieces).:D

So glad to hear it went well for you! I am anxious to see the finished product :) I have to agree though, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't learn about this inexpensive and easy to find solution! Just as a side note, I still look in every new store that "might" have Smooth-Cast products (on the upwards side of 30 now) and have yet to find it or anything comparable.

It is a great alternative, here is my first one unglazed, but after cleanup:

I would love to see it next to the original....I think it might even be more consistent and smoother! Also, if you don't already have them, I would highly recommend going to a Harbor Freight and picking up a set of small files ( I got the ones with part #P4614). They are amazing to work with, and save a lot of sanding time.

Can't wait to see one of the biceps done!

Great job on the arm pieces so far!! keep up the good work! One question, how do you make the moulds? it doesnt look like the expensive Smooth-On products at all..

Yeah, it looks like a hot glue mold to me. I've tried that before works great!

Thanks for the compliments, that is actually a silicone caulking mold with glicerin to speed up the curing process. I "borrowed" the technique from EVAkura. He describes the process in his thread. Hot glue sounds interesting, i may try it sometime:)

Update

I have now casted all of the side bicep parts. here they are at various stages of completion.

I actually have not tried the hot glue method, silicone caulking is different. i imagine you need a rrelease agent like vasaline, and then cover it in hot glue, but im not sure.

Update

Ok 405th, sorry for the long time between updates, i have been busy with school projects and what not, but i have made some progress on the bondo on the helmet, and i have FINALLY found the paint i am using. Tell me your opinion on the accuracy of the color.
Here is the helmet work:

The colour looks fairly accurate, I'd say. Closer to the Halo 3 drab olive than Halo 4's deeper green, but it seems to work. Also, nice work on the rest of the armour - very smooth, crisp edges.

Also, try to curb the enthusiasm on the posts a little - seeking critique is fine, but double-posting without actual content is frowned upon.

Sorry about the double post, I am fairly new to this process, and i would like the input of the people who are more experieced so I can do the best job i can on my work.

Small update, i have been working on the general shape of the right jaw area. This is just my rough bondo work.

Hey 405th, im testing out this method of mine where i grind down the details form the pep and then rebuild in bondo for accuracy and smoothness. for example, on this side, i havent started, but the bumps are a bit chaotic, and i want to make it well refined.
CA60CFC0-EFBC-4379-8336-1A1CFF040C44_zpscmv2trkb.jpg
Then im backing it with bondo
633218B0-4E32-4285-8E62-B6E836777062_zpsnqjjdvpc.jpg
Then im smoothing the area, then i will build it with bondo to get the full detail in
330A69A5-1E65-4D87-BF02-95E4BBEDE540_zpsvfz8orm7.jpg
Tell me what you guys think of the method and if you guys have any alternatives that you use. I used this method here already on the headlamp area.
