OK. It worked now. I guess there was something going on with the site. Thanks. By the way, the armor looks awesome. Gonna start working on it ASAP.

This is what we are making our handbacks look like. I don't know how accurate they are to the game though....

eh? we?

im tryin out the wax method on these today. :D just a few quick questions:
is there any difference between the left and right plates? if so, what its it?

oh and i reorganised the plans onto one page, want it? its quite cramped but it saves a sheet of paper.

Just FYI, plates and boots have been printed. Scoring starts today.

I know you've already seen finished pics, but there are so few threads I find worthy of even posting in... Haha. :lol:

Wait... that wasn't a joke... Hm...

I do believe I will be switching to your models. I've already made folded the Slyfo helmet, and applied some fiberglass, so I'll stick with his there. I'll probably start on the handplates tomorrow. They look great ... very challenging

And awesome craftsmanship (and craftswomanship), TwitchFMX8811, bevbor, & Skullcandy Girl! Very clean folding.

Plate is done. ( Pic1, Pic2 ) Scaling's fudged... This is with 3 inches added to my height before printing. (74 + 3 = 77)

I quickly threw together the size-tester at exactly my height (74) and it doesn't seem that much better. Do you think since not many people are built like super heroes, this piece might have to be scaled down even more?

You might take a measurement of your hand across your knuckles (sans thumb) and add a bit, then size it in pepakura to the appropriate width shown in the lower right corner. Let us know your sizing and how this compares to the scale for your height. I threw your image into photoshop to figure out some measurements. The portion that is directly above the main knuckles is about 87% of the total width. Okay, so my knuckles are 9.5cm across. Account for gloves and say an even 10cm. After a little punching around on the calculator, you'll find you need to add about 15% to your measurement to get the width you need for the handpiece (multiply by 1.15). My result was 11.5cm. I'm 6'5" (77in), and I'd say I have large hands (normal for my guys my size), but using these measurements, I used a scale of 73.0. Master Chief has big hands. You know what that means ..... big handplates!!

So to recap:
* measure across main knuckles
* add around 0.5cm for gloves
* multiply by 1.15
* adjust scale in pepakura to achieve desired width

Correct me if I'm off on the ratio of the knuckle-covering portion to the whole piece. I just went off of nicktendo's photo of the finished piece.

=====================

What is everyone's plan on reinforcing these handplates? Would you still add fiberglass, just a thick resin inner coating, or what?

All good points, but my main concern is using the same scale for every piece to maintain a consistent look. If I scale the hand plates down, I feel like I have to scale the rest of the armor down. I've seen armor with individually scaled pieces, and it's just not right.

I'm 6'2" (74 inches) and I was originally going off the first helmet I made at the scale of 77, which seemed to fit well. (I have a big head.) But even when I scale the pieces down to my exact height (74) they still seem big. The boots alone at scale 74 look like they're going to be at least 4 inches longer than my foot...

Yeah, I've got a big head too, and I'm worried about the size difference. I think though, that the handplates could stand to be a fitted size. You can enhance your build appearance of your core, arms, and legs, but your hands are your hands. But I guess we won't know really until we see the forearms (gauntlets?) ... looking at reference photos, the handplates look to be about the width of the tapered end of the forearms.

[EDIT]
I've finished the left plate. I'd say it fits the hand fairly well. It might could stand to be 0.5-0.75cm smaller, but I'm still gathering reference images to get the best idea. Depending on the thickness of the gloves, this could be the perfect size. I've gotta say ... Bravo Robogenisis, on an excellent design. The details are incredible, a very challenging build, but attainable. The shape also makes itself more structurally sound, and the folds keep the planes firm and tight. You've got this down. (y)

i have a question. i was making the hd handplate and i seemed a bit big. i think it was because i added a couple of extra inches to my height when sizing it. when i scale it should i add any inches to my height and if so how many? or do you only add inches to your height when making the helmet?

Hi Robo,
Here my first experience on resining your stuff.
As stand for piece I used glass cup, works fine :)

We were talking about that earlier. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Some want to use a consistent scale on all the pieces. I personally want to build them to fit relatively well and have good mobility. I ended up scaling it down to about 95% of my height, and it fits okay. It might could use to be a hair smaller, I'm still hunting down the perfect reference picture to see where everything sits on the hand.

As far as I can tell, you might need to scale the pieces DOWN a few inches. I'm 6' (72 inches), and my boot and glove scale have been about 68 or so. Maybe if you're built EXACLTY like the Master Chief, then the scaling thing might work. I'm personally going for the "Make each piece fit" method, but so far the pieces can be scaled the same as all the other pieces.

I've seen some pretty good pieces assembled so far :D. Can't wait to see how a smoothed and finished piece will look.

Got the second plate done, and strapped them on some gloves with string, tape, and some ingenuity. Here's a phone pic of the result (until I can get the camera back). Alright, from the research I've done, I believe the plate is supposed to extend to the middle between the base of your middle finger and the first knuckle ... and then of course to extend to the other end so as not to bump against your forearm. You can't tell from this picture, but I think I got it.

I think I'm going to move forward tomorrow morning with resining the handplates.

Judging from what is being said about scaling the hand plates, something's gone whack on mine. I'm 6'3" so I set the scale to 75 and printed it out and the thing was huge. I measured the back of my hand (somewhere around 11 cm), so I kept downsizing until I had the right assembled length, and the scale was 58. The plate fits from the back of my wrist and extend just of over top of my knuckles.

I thought most of the plates I've seen are kinda big, though I'm starting to believe I made mine too small.

I know its a bad pic (I took it with my webcam), but does it look right?
