and you put this mix on the inside of the helmet which is already hardened by fiber glass matt?

If you want to. It will certainly cover up all the gaps and fine spikes inside the helmet. The only reason I didn't go with more rondo on the inside after fiberglassing was because I did a pretty good job with the woven fibreglass mat and achieved a pretty smooth finish with minor sanding required. The soft rubber lining I glued on the inside of the helmet takes care of any risk of scratching my precious head and pretty face.

A little late, but here are the pictures of my Respirator.

This is the respirator.

These are the Cartridges.

I did a negative pressure test and could feel the respirator very, very slightly hug my face. I checked the seals and they're tight as possible. When I resined I could still smell the vapors, just not as much. Are these cartridges and respirator just not rated for this kind of work?

sorry this question might have been repeated but, is it absolutely necessary to put fiberglass cloth on armor?

If you don't want your build to crack/break, it's highly recommended.

Sure, you can put only resin on the cardstock, but it won't withstand any impact forces against it... at all. Which will be extremely problematic in the bondo phase.

The cloth helps reinforce the build itself.

ohh ok, i'm just on a budget somewhat and trying to simplify as much as i can, and does the fiberglass go on the inside? after or before the resin?

First you resin the inside and outside a few times, then you brush on some resin on the inside and lay down the fiberglass cloth inside simultaneously.

thanks! and just onne more question...i[m going to use super glue when i make my pep, will it melt or anything when i use the resin?

I think for the best result, i would resin outside (very light coat to prevent major warping) then resin inside (again dont go crazy nice thin even layer) then once those two are done fiberglass inside. it sounds like alot but i went through one quart of resin and i believe a 2x2ft squar of matt. anyway if this process is done very neat and almost perfect, then hopefully less warping will occur making life much easier in the bondo process. Hope this helps! :)

I have a question for you prop makers: When you guys make hammers (or any other weapon, really, but most especially hammers) using the pep method, I would imagine you use rondo to reinforce the inside. Is this true, and if so, how strong is the weapon, and how much reinforcement did you use (yes, I know rondo is heavy and not as strong as fiberglass. The weight I actually sort of want, but most especially the strength).

Also, does it withstand drops onto the ground and other kinds of fairly strong impacts? Thanks for any input. I know that's a lot of text to answer, but I've only used rondo to smooth the insides of my suit pieces and provide last minute strength.

Depending on the brand you use, probably not.

I've been going the "lazy" route, and using scotch tape instead of adhesives to put together my pep parts (frowned upon by most pepakuraists :p), and it actually holds up pretty good.

The Bondo brand Resin will actually generate enough heat to melt stuff, but the 3M brand resin is pretty stable.

Uh, what are you planning on hitting with the hammer?

Actually, rondo has a lot less strength than fiberglass or even a straight resin pour. It's very brittle unless it's poured pretty thick, but even if you do try to pour it thick on all surfaces, you're bound to end up with a few spots that are a bit thin.

The most successful hammers I've seen built were all out of foam.

Quick questin about 1st stage resin:

Its 40 degrees (F) outside, how long will resin take to set in low temperture if using the recommended mixture on back of container (3M brand)

I would recommend either waiting until it's a little warmer out, or building some sort of heated enclosure (a hotbox) since 40 degrees is the absolute minimum temperature that fiberglass resin is rated for. A hotbox can be made from just about any storage container like a rubbermaid tub, but the most creative solution I have seen was a metal trash can, where you can flip the lid upside down and hang the pep from the lid handle. An incandescent light is placed inside the enclosure to warm up the interior enough to properly cure the resin.

The only other option I can see is to periodically go outside with a heat gun or hot hair dryer and go over the piece with the warm air. This option requires a lot of attention over a period of a few hours though.

Ill have to engineer a hot box this weekend, I got a test piece (Mark IV hand) built last night and wanted to go over it with the resin tonight, but Ill hold off till I can get something put together. Would not have thought of that - thanks a ton

bondo spreaders

Hello everyone i have a quick question im currentlhy building a army of two salem mask and i need to know what spreader i can use ive heard of playing cards being used. I have some cards but im not sure how they will stand up any recomendations for some smqller spreaders for bondo?

Bondo sells spreaders specifically for their body filler, they can be found in the same location that you bought the filler. They come in a pack of three, at three different sizes. They are pretty easy to cut down to whatever size you want. Also, if you keep them clean (meaning wipe off the bondo right after you use them) they can last a very long time.

Yeah ixhqve a pack i didnt think of cutting them down though any more tips for some that arent meant for spreaders. Do you think a penny saver would work?
