Dude, superb work on the suit! I can't wait to see it finished!

By the way, how did you find the scale for your shin pieces?

-Pony

Thanks Pony!

I just used the same scale I built them at to fit me. I'm pretty tall, so I imagine there will be a need to downsize a tiny bit. Or did you mean how I did I figure the scale on the part in general?

This one.

The reason I ask is becuase the knee piece is floating above the shin piece.

-Pony

Oh, that's just because I moved it straight up and combined the geometry so I could better unfold the part in pepakura. The knee still fits flushed on the shin, just not in the pepakura model. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's basically like that because I am lazy and didn't want to make two separate .pdo files and combine them. My next unfold won't be like that.

Got to get some basic sanding done on the helmet. So far so good. It is no surprise that the main area of focus for smoothing is going to be the dome part of the helmet and the front/chin section. The rest of the parts fit smoothly and only required a bit of excess resin cleanup.

If you look at the beginning of this thread I posted images of my first pepakura helm model. It had a pretty rough looking unfold, to say the least (especially the back portion) This buck is more streamlined in that sense. Since the details in the back seem to differ from one ODST version to the next, I think I'll keep it blank so the artist assembling it can decide on what version they want to go for.

Also, for some reason the hardware store in town didn't have body filler or spot putty when I checked. So I guess in the meantime I'll continue working out trouble spots.

Going to be releasing the new shin unfold, as well as the A4 variant of the chest. Also, I made a new belt buckle because the one I have up now is fail.

Lol yeah, joined when I was 17. My parents had to sign me up. Man, that feels like such a long time ago.
I can't really give you crap for being Army, I was about to go Army OCS after college but I ended up taking a civilian job offer (and to stay with the gf)

And thanks man, I'm still going to have to try that beer you recommended.

Ah OCS would have landed in Fort Benning where I was at for OSUT; your not missing much. I tell you what, I make beer and when we have an event I'll bring some and you'll have a few with your name on it

I like the revised helmet model buddy!! I might have to try that one instead of the block build.

Files UPDATE

This is one of those awesome pictures again. It actually has artistic value!

(Interesting detail: Why are your washing machines identical, but mirrored?)

Lol thanks Ventrue. While they are matching, you can't see the pair of pliers just out of frame that I have to use to set the broken dial on the washer... :/

Haha, sounds good man. I'll have to find something as well. My friend just finished up in Ft. Benning.

Thanks Matt, it is still a block build though. Just an easier, less time consuming build.

I wouldn't mined molding this for you, btw what school did you go to for 3d modeling?

Thanks for the offer Hecito, right now I'm trying to get some of my own time in to teach myself the process. But if there is something I am working on in the future that could save me time I'll keep you in mind!

I started doing 3d in high school, junior year. There was a vocational school that offered it so I went. Got me out of a bunch of stupid and useless HS classes. Vocational training is great if you are already sure about what you want to do for a living. After the military I went to Full Sail university in Orlando, used my GI bill from the government to pay for the tuition. So a good chunk of my 3D knowledge was acquired there.

OK

Finally got the update on the shin model for you guys (chrisrunner I'm looking at you!) Again it's the same old tune, less pieces and a cleaner finished pep. Sorry about the delay.

Also, new belt buckle. The old one was a very quick first attempt just to get the armor complete. The look kept bothering me so I sat down and made a new file from looking at the game screens of Halo 3. Then I added a bend deformer to give it some curvature for comfort, er I guess.

Still have to rework the chest core A4 variant (haven't forgotten!) Then I'm making the helmet binoculars and some Reach stuff. I'm pretty sure making the Reach variant of the helmet wouldn't be too much trouble. I just need a good side/back image to make the appropriate changes.

I know there are other members using the files I made in their builds. Unfortunately I don't remember all of the member names off of the top of my head. With your permission I would like to add links to your threads on the OP. PM me or just post here if that is ok. I won't do it unless you give me the go ahead.

Here is something I've been working on here and there. I think I will build it tonight...

ODST 2nd Helmet Update

Ok, just got done working outside. It got warm enough for me to get out there and do some dremel work and 1 coat of primer. I am pretty happy with the progress so far. To me, this helmet has already exceeded my older model at the same build stage.

What I have done so far

Pepped the helmet
Applied 2 light coats of resin on the outside
Applied 1 heavy coat of resin on the inside
Applied an additional medium coat of resin on the outside
Filled the helmet sections with smoothcast 320 liquid plastic.
LIGHTLY sanded entire helmet (by hand) 80 grit
Used dremel to clear resin and define lines on the top of helmet.
1 coat of quick primer.

I am still waiting to get some spot putty so I can smooth out the dome. I wanted the lines to already be defined before I started using bondo. That way, I can just apply the spot putty over the lines and use a triangle file to bring them back rather than guessing.

I'm going to have to use the dremel some more on the mouth portion and neck seal. A lot more sanding after that. Then when I'm done smoothing the top portion I plan on adding a wall around the base of the helm so that the mould can properly form.

I'm going for an overall cleaner build this time around. Lets hope the weather is good again tomorrow.

Yet again Hugh, more great models. When will you ever stop amazing us here? I love the way the new helmet looks, it's like you grabbed it right out of the game. after you mold the new helmet is there any chance that you will do a run of casts? Great job Hugh and keep going on the armor build, I can't wait to see more.

Thanks Andrew,

Yes I am going to make casts of this new helm available. And once I get my scale I will be selling my older casts on the classifieds. So keep an eye out.

Helmet Attachments?

binoculars2.jpg

This morning I decided to start on the helmet upgrades and attachments. I figured I'd go for the largest part first, Romeo's binocular/nvg whatever it is-attachment.

I was hoping there was someone out there with several reference pics of this? The few mid-high res images I was able to locate were only from this three quarter view and 1 front. I'd like to be able to get a good side/back 3q view and possibly a top angle.

All of these parts I am doing are going to fit flush with my ODST helmet file. You will be able to import the attachment into the helmet .pdo and adjust the scale that way so you know it will fit properly :)

Oh and if you would like me to do other helmet attachments either get me the reference or at least point me in the right direction. It helps if there isn't just 1 angle. I do plan on doing the Reach upgrades as well.

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks all

Hey hugh. Romeos attachment is looking awesome so far! Dont know if you found what you need. Dont know if youve seen this one but its from the side.

I don't have ref pics, but dutch should be easy to do with your model. you can merely raise some of the panels. It also needs the mohawk and the little thingys on the side (where the vents were)

Micky just has the spotlamp on the helm, and buck the antenna. On the goggles, there's a plate right on the forehead, you can see it on your ref pic. The shape of the "arms" also needs to taper more. Just saying... but I am excited! Can't wait to see the finished products!

Looks amazing as always Hugh! I would definitly be interested in a cast whenever you make them! Keep it up!

Are you also going to add any details such as the vent slots on the helmet and the details on the helmet brim?

Here's a pic of the brim details and vent slots taken from Rube's awesome ODST helmet, nice guy and I wish he came back.

Thanks a ton rino, that really helped me out.

This is one sexy odst helmet ;)
Its like HD straight out from the game.
I'm building one right now.
Thanks Hugh!

Your welcome, and good luck on your build, be sure to post progress pics!

Thanks again Fett. I do plan on making the Dutch helmet addons. Though I think I am going to make it so that it's more of an upgrade rather than an entirely new helmet model. I plan on making the parts so they fit on the original.

I was going to do the same sort of detail, but make my own out of sheet styrene on my own final model. With this new ODST helmet I've left out small areas like that so they can be easily cut and applied to the helmet after the cast. It keeps the lines cleaner and decreases the risk of having trouble areas in my pulls. If others really need a template I suppose I could make one up.

Sniper Upgrade

Capture.jpg

Ok, this is about as far as I want to get on this right now. The base is there and most of the details are blocked out. You will need to add detail lines across the faceplate.

The model itself should fit flush onto the V2 helmet file. The sniper attachment .pdo is actually two parts. One is the binocular part and the other is the mounting block that fits on the top front section. (thank you Fett for pointing that out)

Like all of the other attachments and upgrades, you can import this .pdo file into the helmet file and scale so it fits.

Going to call it a night. Good luck everyone!
