Your skill at sculpting is awesome and the helmet looks great. I do have some criticism though. And I feel weird because I am a total noob at building stuff and I am an insect in relation to your sculpting skills.
At first glance I thought it was a little bottom heavy. It doesn't seem to be high enough for the base.
But Hell I'd be very proud if my helmet looked half as good as yours. I just love the crispness of the edges.
melek, thanks for the honest critique. i was thinking the same thing. in the helmet reference pics the top of the helmet is almost flat looking on top and the helmet looks very squat. i tried to do the same thing with my helmet. also the angle that the helmet is sitting makes the jaw look huge. i am going to put the weather striping going around the bottom of the helmet so that should give me another quarter of an inch in hieght. when i have it finished i will post some pics of it on a stand so you can see it the way it would be worn.
the helmet in the weta video is really odd shaped. from the side the dome does not complete a half a circle. and from the front the top looks flat. no fanmade helmet is going to be perfect, i try to do the best i can.
It is a tad heavy on the bottom, but I don't think it's that bad. In the WIP pics with the different angles, it looks pretty balance... Like Mr.Bungle mentioned, I believe it's mostly the way the angle of the pic was taken and how it was sitting. My 2 cents.
it is all good, i worked on the helmet today and made the top taller by adding more bondo. i think Meleck was right. this will be the 4th time i hacve redone the dome, so no biggie. i think it already looks better. i would rather get it right before molding. becuase once it is molded , you are stuck with it.
anyways here is the chest piece, i did a color test on it for the squad me and some cats from the alabama garrison are doing. got some clean up to do and one part to fix before molding, the top. , but pretty much done.
meleck. you were right, though, so i am fixing it. some times when you are sculpting, you have stared at the thing you are working on for so long and you kinda go snow blind. a fresh set of eyes will pick up stuff you miss.
THE HELMET IS NOT FINISHED. i am just playing with paint schemes.nothing like a big red stripe to show you how out of wack one line is. the one on the right will have to be redone. i have redone the dome for the 59th time. and have the back under way. couple of more details and this will be ready for clean up and molding.
here the finished chest piece , right after i painted it i drop it in some foam!!
and in my spare time i started the gaunlets. borrowed an idea from kevin w on how he makes his clone armor with the base of floral foam. this is the rough shape. i plan to build a gaunlet minus details , then mold it and cast 2 gaunlets then make a right and a left.
here is the helmet, it is at the dreaded clean up phase. i added the back neck details. now i get go over the whole helmet looking for pits, dings and cut marks and fix them. then we are ready for molding.
thanks, guys. those pads really make the helmet look complete. so i could not leave them out. i am trying to decide if i should mold them in with the helmet or mold them seperately in rubber.
Looks really really good. I think this is the best helmet I've seen yet. I love the detail on it. Particularly where the visor meets the ear. A lot of time, this is done as a clear piece but you have the recessed area. Loving that helmet.
