My First Helmet/armor Build

Dude, that's seriously awesome! you did that well on your first suit? You're gonna be a monster at this. By the way: what chest file did you use? was it the one with ALL the details or did you do 'em yourself?

I can't believe how amazing your armor looks and great the paint job is on it.

When will you be able to work on and post pics of your thighs and shins?

time for Q and A, heh

the chest is FS HD model

I'm using 110lb cardstock bought from Walmart, nuthin special

I have pics of thighs and shins up on page 2. I have since changed the paintwork on the shins, and made them look better but if time permits I'm going to do the new model ones and scale them a little larger so I don't have to cut them. Oh, and both thighs are finished as well I'm soon going to post some pics of my completed and mounted boots, and if I remember I'll post some pics of the mounting system I used for thighs as well.

I started on FS HD helmet yesterday and I've finished the jaw area pep so far. I should have it pepped out maybe by end of weekend, but I'm running a mile a minute here doing several things at once. I'm getting very close to finishing and I'm getting anxious.

Man its people like you that inspire me to get my armour done by my deadline, your armour is nothing short of amazing! :)

I'm winding down on the project, and only have the hd helmet left to go, oh and I might get the new model shins in if I have time which looks likely. There might be another update or 2 before total completion, but it'll be a couple weeks for me to get to that point.

I've pretty much got the boots figured out on the mount system I'm going to do. I want to walk around a bit outside with them on to make sure nothing goes stupid on me. Essentially what I did was pad the toe a little put some industrial velcro on the padding and on the top of boot. It seems like it will hold well, and still have a little give from being padded so I don't wreck them when I walk into walls. On the back part of boot I'm epoxying some neodymium magnets in a couple spots to hold that part down. I used hot glue to get toilet plunger on back half. Everything is removable from the shoe and thats what I was shooting for, hopefully this system will work. On a side note I wish I hadn't been lazy and cut out the little circles for the details. I WILL do them after Haloween by just cutting out what I got and adding them in.

Here is where I'm at with the helmet...If I don't have it completely pepped by the end of the weekend I will be very close.

and finally here is just a random with me being a goof.

didn't want to triple post, even in a WIP thread so the unimportant previous post is gone...

I got the basecoat on the helmet for the second time today. I wasn't happy with some stuff so I redid some bondo work and had to repaint the whole thing. If the weathering turns out good I'll be about 95% happy with the helmet. It is FAR better than my first, and I feel my work has come a long way from June. The next pics you see will be a finished suit, hopefully. Until then I present my first hd helmet soaking wet with green :D

I have to say, that you have come a long way. Im exited to see the pics on the finished product. Oh and awsome job on the armour! :)

I've got the paintwork finished on it after a little revision as of right now. I'm going to Radio Shack tomorrow for the LEDs which ought to be fun since I've never messed with LED lighting before. I do have Spase's diagram so it should help immensely. The visor is just pulled out for pics because of glare, and I decided not to go double visor route on this since the donor clear I have for the cut visor doesn't make much of an appearance difference, and I don't really want to dump more money in the project at this point since I'm very over budget. Oh, and I need to get padding in there too.

I should have some completed pics of the entire suit up by end of weekend after I do some minor tweaking along with finishing details. I reupped my WOW account which was a mistake before I finished the suit, and its killing me timewise. Heck, I still need to walk outside with the boots on and check to see if I need to trim the toes on them.

The new helmet is a lot better than your first. What can I say, the more you work on these props, the better you get. My first helmet was pure garbage..

Anyway, awesome work bud. keep it up!

Got the LEDs in today at the cost of $40 for mats, tools a burned hand and cut finger. With the exception of my on the job injuries it went off without a hitch. Here are a couple pics with them on, but keep in mind the camera flash is killing how bright they are. I still have a little padding, and a couple tiny exterior details to finish, but I'll get to it tomorrow. I'm maybe an hour or two away from total completion, if there is even such a thing.

heres one with lights off, and no flash.

Aside from doing some VERY MINOR tweaking the suit is complete. I went out for some pics, and freaked out the neighborhood as I went for a couple block walk. Here are some pics, and yes tightening the belt and raising it, and thighs a tad is included in the tweaking.

I would like to thank the community, staff and everyone I sent a PM to for help in building this. When I started back in June I NEVER thought it would turn out so well, nor did I think it would actually be completed before deadline. Thank you guys SO much for all your help, you are truly awesome!

hmm, my pics aren't showing up for some reason...give me a bit

Woah woah woah, how did I not see this?!

That's your first set of armor? I call shenanigans! :)

Seriously awesome work. The paint looks great, the pieces fit, and I agree your second helmet is definitely the shiz.

Congratulations on getting it finished! And especially since it's before your deadline, that's always a tremendously accomplishing feeling.

something I noticed in putting the suit on yesterday...

I'm usually a painting pro in my own mind at least, but on the plastic plunger I put between the toe and back part of boot I'm experiencing flaking. The process I used to paint the plastic was a scuffing with sandpaper, then a coat of automotive spray primer, followed by another light scuffing. I did not put any paint over the primer as I wanted a worn look. Anybody got any solution to the paint coming off? In places its flaking I can see the gloss from the plastic, and I'm thinking its coming off because its such a bendable plastic.

omg!!! I cant believe the amazing work youve done on this! I have another member to look up to. I cant tell you how impressed i am
