Any new updates? Nice neck piece, btw... visor's really clear from the inside, too. How do you plan on attaching it to the helmet? If you already have, can you show how?
Not much new to show yet. I've been working on smoothing the helmet. The first pic shows a little tip I picked up from the forensic reconstruction sculptors. When I need to lay down a patch of filler I first cut some self-adhesive foam strips to serve as a depth guide. Cuts down on the sanding a bit.
I plan on attaching the visor with threaded studs anchored in the helmet.
I purchased a set of black pilot's gloves and have been toying with dressing them up a bit. Not sure I like them.
I dunno what your BUdget is Rube, I think the closest thing to the ODST are possibly The Hatch Tactical gloves with leather wrapped knuckles and reinforced palms. I think they run from 50-$60 and they're SUPER comfortable
Your doing a wonderful job man!
I got that filler, guys seriously, get the Dyna Delite stuff instead of Bondo, it is so much more worth it, and is so much easier to sand.
Ah the neck opening could be narrower, I just worry about people getting claustrophobic. SOmetimes if something gets too close around my neck I start freaking out, even if I have a helmet etc on. Sorry
Awsome helm! Looks very smooth and well sanded. Been so many new amazing builders and files since I've been to the site. Especially love the visor, might look into the myself sometime.
RadioactiV777:
I all kinds of agree with your assertion that Dyna Delite is worth the couple of extra bucks it costs. It's not as strong as bondo but it certainly sands much easier and loads your paper less. It also has a longer "magic time" where it is easy to carve with a knife.
Don't bother with the Bondo Professional Gold. It's just regular Bondo tinted green as far as I can tell.
Silvershadow:
I had been wanting to do something like this for quite a while but just couldn't work up the enthusiasm for a stormtrooper or the like. But then I found this site. The ODST pep files really got the motors running. I'm not a sculptor so creating armor from scratch was not happening.
MJOLNIRWarrior:
It took a week to cut and glue the helmet working about 3 hours a day.
SKG:
This neck will do for now but I think I'll have to do another a bit narrower. The helmet bottom rests on the flange when I wear it. It doesn't help that I have no neck though.
Hmmmmmmmm, well I should make another version with a short neck I suppose, when is the only question XD Hopefully wen you put some padding in the helmet it might help, maybe...
Looks like everything is going smooth (no pun intended, I swear)
So does your neck piece go straight on your head or do you have to turn your head to get it on?
I'm thinking about cutting mine once i get the bondoing done on it and just securing with clamps.
Maybe it will be a little easier to get on
The height of the neck ring is fine and it pretty much needs to be that high for proper effect visually. It's the width of the neck opening in the shoulder to shoulder axis that I need to make smaller. I'm not claustrophobic . The neck ring should tuck under the helmet a bit.
I had to split the neck across the shoulders and added about an inch front to back so it would fit my chest. I glassed it back into one piece, obviously. I can get my head through the opening if I tilt it and fold my nose over. I was planning to make it two piece to make it easier to get on.
1.) Did you have to scale the helmet in Pepakura before you printed it out? Or does "one size fit all"?
2.) I read on one of your earlier post saying you'd be giving the visors away and we would only have to pay shipping? Is that offer still up for grabs? Or are you going to be selling them, seeing that it came out so well?
This is looking ridiculously professional, Excellent job on this!
