Questions about Plasti Dip for those foam users:

Do you have to use a primer before using it and would you need to spray something on it after you apply it to the foam?
Is it toxic? Would I need a respirator and gloves?
Is there a specific kind of Plastic Dip that I need?

I dunno about toxicity, but from what I gather plasti-dip acts as a primer for paint so that it doesn't crack.

_____

I was wondering if you would need to scale up pep files when using them as templates for foam because of the thickness? For something like a chest core or shins. I figure that the pieces that don't around any body part wouldn't need scaling up.

Not exactly, Plasti-Dip is an all-purpose rubber coating. It's usefull for a number of hobbies, but most of us use it to seal foam projects so the paint does not soak into the foam. But, yes, an added benifit of Plasti-Dip's flexibility is the reduction of cracking paint in flexible parts. The Plasti-Dip most comonly used here is an aerosol, but it is no more harmful than a can of spraypaint, so any precautions you take for spraypaint will work with Plasti-Dip. You only need gloves if you don't want to get any on your hands, but since it's just a rubber coating, it's pretty harmless to your skin (unless you're allergic to that sort of thing).

Not necessarily. When you scale a pep model, it's advisable to add in a few cm to account for padding. This padding would be close to or thicker than the foam used. Also, since foam is more forgiving than pep, less padding will be needed (if any at all). So, the need to rescale a pep for foam use should be minimal.

More foam questions! Is it a bad idea to stack craft foam sheets together (or stick them together for the self adhesive foam sheets) and then cut out pieces for sliced weapons? I was thinking maybe 3-5 sheets at a time. I cringe at the thought of cutting 17 of the same piece. ):

Hello and this is my first post ever! And I decided to read the stickies first...

Anyway, I'm planning on making a full set of Halo 4 Master Chief armour and right now I'm stuck on what material to use. I first was going to use basic styrofoam to keep costs down since the more expensive building material foam is about half as thick and twice as expensive.

Now I'm reading about EVA foam and other stuff and I'm just curious where to get EVA foam. I live in Canada but I'm close to the USA, so other than local business I can get to major stores on both sides. If you get yours from local places could you please tell me the type of business so I could search them out.

Other than that, could anyone list off other materials I could use? I'm wanting to work with my hands, paper build is way to annoying for me, I saw my friend try it and he couldn't last a full build lol. I was even considering any type of soft wood that could be carved so if anyone could also list those off as well for me.

Hello all ! I was curious.. has anyone seen or done multiple visors on one helmet.
By that let me explain my idea.

Im thinking of a recon helmet with a gold stripe down the center, offset with greys and blue.
so I was thinking a blue mirror visor spliced onto a gold visor to continue the striping on to chin.

I don't see why that wouldn't work. In fact, it would ensure that the parts are better aligned. You'd have to pay close attention to the thickness of the foam, however. From what I'm hearing here, it sounds like you're thinking about building something like my Reach pistol (correct me if I'm wrong). The slices in that file (and in any file) take into account the material at a certain thickness (in the pistol's case 1/16" thick). The foam will have to be that thickness and if it is not, some math will have to be done on your part (meaning that you may have to eliminate a number of layers to make up the difference in thicknesses).

EVA Foam is the best for cheap armor. It is harder to get clean results with it than pepakura, but the cost is awesome. Living in the americas, it's easy to get ahold of. Just use amazon!

It's the right thickness, and is stiff enough and won't shatter like styrofoam.

This guy has the same idea as you, good one to look at, scroll to the last picture on the page for the final two tone look:

I feel a little relieved now, thanks! I just shot a random number out there, but I was thinking about doing your pistol slice, hahaha. I kinda got the math down, but I'm gonna just guess-timate it by rounding the numbers a little. Craft foam is like 2mm thick and it looks like 14 slices thick at 1/16" at the grip so it's around 10 or 11 slices with the craft foam. I'm afraid to buy the poster boards they have at Walmart since they don't show the measured thickness. ):

Circumference is what goes around your head. You want either the width, depth or height.

I hate to ask and i don't know if i can post this here but could someone kindly point me to where i can get the right heads for detailing removing pieces of hard pieces?

I don't get what you want. I think you might be asking about accessories for your rotary tool. A hardware store that sells the tool itself would have those.

Total noob question... how do I go about posting wip pics? Been with the site for a while just new to the forum thing and getting up to a quality of work I would like to share. Just don't know how to get the pics loaded. I click on the icon that says insert image and it asks for a url don't know what to do with it from there. Anybody? Feeling kinda dumb here, I'm not completly tech illiterate this is just outside my realm of experience. Thanks
(not even sure if I posted this right)
