Boot and helmet are looking great. And my son's all foam boots squeaked a lot until he walked about a mile in them. :p

Keep up the good work.

Beautiful work, man. It's looking really tight.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the craft foam? I found only small packets at my local craft store (they're super thin, too) but hoping to but them in bulk since I'll need more to cover the EVA. I've found a few places online but was curious as to your source.

Keep up the excellent work!

TavernKnight,
I got all of my craft foam from Hobby Lobby. They have several different sizes, colors and thicknesses. RoxyRoo said that she got her foam from Joanne's which is a fabric store and that she got it in roll form. I'm going to follow that lead when I run out of the sheets I currently have.

Hope this helps!

Sorry for the double post but....

My wife and I are at the hospital right now getting ready to bring my 2nd son into the world! Needless to say this may put my build on a bit of a hold. I only have the shins to complete in order to have the entire suit built (they are 90% done). Oh, and 1 question: How long does it take a glassed helmet to lose that resin smell?

Wish me luck!

Congratulations! Hopefully, a new generation of Spartans is beginning!

The helmet will always have a resin smell, but it becomes less strong after about 3 weeks or so. I ended up putting a piece of foam padding in front of my mouth and nose, which helped a lot, but I also sprayed some odor-off stuff my dad uses on my hockey gear to get rid of the stink.

Silly question, but is the white material on your suit another type of foam? I have done to pep'd fiberglassed, bondo'd suits and They are ok, but I wanna try foam and go for detail as such.

Congrats on the 2nd. Awesome. Hope all is well and that he's happy and healthy. Take care of that one. We can wait for a while for an update. Well. . . . . Maybe not a while!!!! :p We'll be here for you!!! and Good Luck!!!

@Devohter - it's called craft foam. I got it from Hobby Lobby. It comes in various sizes, thicknesses and colors. It's inexpensive and works great for adding fine details to foam armor.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Ghost! Im looking forward to my own first foam build. Your work makes me anxious to start but Im really going to take my time and make the details POP rather than my last two works haha

Thank you! I bet he'll let his inner gamer out at an early age! Is the resin smell one of the reasons that many people make molds and cast plastic versions of their helmets? I can see how it would be lighter and easier to work with, but I never thought about the smell being an issue before.

He's actually my 3rd child but my second son. I think we'll be home sometime tuesday and I might get an hour or two here and there to try to complete the last few things. I've got the next week off from work so when my wife and son are resting, I might sneak away and build!

Grats on number 2 matey hope it all goes well!!!

Thanks bro!!

That is looking sooo cool. Can't wait to see it all done. Good job.

Thanks! I cant wait to see it finished either!

if you cast the helmet, do you think you might sell a copy?

I havent thought about that. How do people usually accomodate for size when selling casts? I'd be afraid that the cast wouldnt fit. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

Taking your time will make alot of difference! And I certainly dont claim to be an expert, but if I can help in any way just ask.

So even though I'm at the hospital, I have several pics on my iPhone that I have uploaded and can share with the community because this awesome hospital provides wireless access! Yaaaaay!

Here's some progress pics of the shins so far.

Thanks for looking!

NICE! Rocking the tube sock!

Everything is turning out so well man! I remember when you first started. You're turning out pieces like a machine and they're all high detail

Ghost,

I understand when using foam you have to cut at angles to get the right shape and line ups. So do you pep your lay outs and go off looks, or is it more trial and error and correcting the angles when gluing pieces together.
