"Help!" for: Papercraft or Pepakura

Hello 405th,

I have always had a lot of admiration towards cosplay and self made costumes, but decided it's finally time to start making one myself.
I am looking at different possibilities of making these costumes and since eva foam is almost impossible to find in my country ( the Netherlands, please correct me if I'm wrong... please do! ) I've decided to go with pepakura.
That leaves me two problems: 1. The paper everyone seems to use is Cardstock, but I can't really find what kind of paper this is and the named doesn't ring any bells in the Netherlands either it seems.
There are ofcourse other types of paper, but I've got no clue what weight I should go for.
I've read somewhere it should be around 200gr/m2 ( oh dem measurement ).
Any chance someone knows what I should pick?
2. I've been looking everywhere including this forum about measuring your head for a helmet, but there are so many different ways to measure it.
I would love to hear your preferences and stuff that didn't work out for you at all.
Hope to hear from you guys soon!

Kind regards,
Cetah

Hi, I have a big problem: in my country in winter the max temperature is about 10° and the resin can't harder at this temperature so I must find another product to harder my pepakura project.
I find a smooth cast 300, but I read maybe is not the same of fiberglass is true?Is it resin too? What kind of body filler I can use on it?

Thanks and sorry for my english

If you mix body filler hot enough, it will cure in 10C temperatures, but Resin takes too long even hot to set well in that temp (unless it's part of a Rondo mix). If it's 10F you're kind of boned..

Smoothcast is a plastic pour, it won't be as strong as fiberglass, but it can be pretty good. You may want to look into water based resins which can be mixed inside a house.

You can also try mixing and applying your body filler and resin and then putting the armor under a box with a blow dryer or other heating device and CAREFULLY watching them to make sure they don't catch on fire. This is the "hotbox" method a lot of people use with some success.

Very thanks man, but the hotbox scaring me a lot :) For you experience the smoothcast is stronger enough to make a mold? If not I must buy a acqua resin no way, but in my country is like ask a glass of water in the Sahara

The hotbox is not that dangerous, a decent hair dryer and really those giant buckets you can get at hardware stores for like 5$ work well.

But if you don't wish to go that route, I understand. Smoothcast will be a LOT more expensive though. If you pour it thick enough it'll be strong enough for mold casting, but it might cost you more than trying a hotbox. It's all about what money you have and how much effort you wish to put forth. You could even get a space heater and put it in a shed with the piece, or a detached garage. Just some ideas!

thanks, but the resin isn't cheaper in my city. 1 kg of resin cost about 20€, 1kg of smooth cast 300 25€ and if I'll buy 7kg pack the cost is only 85€...You understand now doubts, you americans guys are very lucky for this hobby you can find everything in the normal DIY shop. You believe me if I say you in my country there is only one distributor for smooth-on product and there is at 120 km far from my home? Or in my city in four different DIY shop there are only two brand of resin?

Cetah,
I had no idea what "card stock" was when I started a little while ago, and actually bought the biggest note cards I could find. Bottom Line: All you need is good strong paper, something you will be able to quickly feel on touch as being different than regular printer paper. You can run this stronger paper through most printers for the Peppakura printing needs. I am absolutely certain you guys have good quality paper and art stores ALL over Europe.

As to measurements, I honestly have no idea. I also have no patience at this time for peppakura work, so Ebay is my friend, or some other places where you can have the pieces made. I've done that and then started the resin and bondo work myself, which I enjoy a lot more. Find local builders in your area and hit them up on how they do it and I'm sure they would love to have another member in the fold.

Hope this helps and happy labor's of love!

Should I worry about getting bugs or viruses from using the downloaded pep designer?

Yeah, it will probably erase your hard drive, cause an electrical fire inside your pc, resulting in your house burning down, sending the fire department over, but not before the whole neighborhood burns down. Or....you could choose to realize that dozens (if not hundreds) of users at this site (not including all the Pepakura users who aren't members here) are already using the software without issue. :p

Pepakura is a reputable program made by an LLC company in Japan. If you get it from their website, you should be fine.

I've been lookin for almost two hours but I can't find a good jorge helmet pep file that isn't Brandon Mclain or whoever, it won't let me download it. any links for the helmet would b great

One post is enough, you don't need to ask in multiple places for the same thing. The brandon McClain unfold is fine I downloaded it five minutes ago, Being on 4shared however it requires you to have an account. Setup is easy and free, many forum members have one.

Hey guys looking for some help with pepakura and I guess scaling or just measurements in general.
I'm unfolding the Masseffect 3 Disciple shotgun, A basic ratio I've obtained for total length:grip length is 1000mm:77mm
Now I've averaged the gun grips of all the nerf guns, prop guns I have and found measurements of 40mm long by 30 mm wide. These dimensions however give the gun a total length of 532mm half a metre.

So my question is does this seem right? Is 530 mm correct, or should I reduce the size?
such a long way to ask a question but yeah and heres a picture to go with it.
